The Level 5  Higher Nationals Diploma (HND) is a two year course. During your first year you will study a Level 4 Higher Nationals Certificate (HNC). Upon successful completion of the first year, you will progress onto the second year to study the Level 5 HND which will then enable you to progress onto Level 6 Degree Top-Up programme at many Universities.

Summary

The purpose of  Higher Nationals in Computing is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the computing sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. In addition, Higher Nationals in computing give students experience of the breadth and depth that will prepare students for further study or training. The programme is a non-specialist ‘Computing’ pathway, without committing to a particular professional specialism, however, there is a great emphasis on learning the Python language. 

As a result, Higher Nationals in Computing programme is valued by companies and employers and is perfect for individuals who wish to have more of a ‘hands-on experience with their studies and is also valuable in preparing students for life at university.

Curriculum

Higher National Diploma in Computing

The Level 5 HND in Computing requires two years’ study with the College. Throughout the course, you will be required to complete 15 core, optional and specialized modules (eight in year 1 and seven in year 2).

To achieve the qualification, a student must have completed units equivalent to 120 credits at level 4 and 120 credits at level 5 and scored at least a pass in 105 credits at level 4 and 105 credits at level 5, amounting to 210 + credits.

You will study the following units:

YEAR 1 - Level 4 HNC

Computing Research Project (Pearson-set)

Business Intelligence

Cisco “CCNAv7”, Cisco “Cybersecurity Essentials” & Microsoft Azure Cloud Computing, learning and programming with Python, IA, are integrated in the Higher National  L5 HND in computing programme. Actual optional units may be subject to change if sufficient number of students decide to follow one of the six specialist pathways offered by Prime College. The course will also develop a broad range of transferable skills, which include communicating, team work, planning & organising, problem solving, IT skills and numerical techniques.

75% classroom-based learning supervised by a tutor

20% work-based learning supervised by a tutor

5% e-Learning supervised by a tutor in real time, guest speakers and field trips (Optional).

Students will attend college for 14 hours – over three days. Students are expected to complete approximately 22.5 hours per week of independent study (i.e. on research and completing assignments).

YEAR 2 - Level 5 HND

The Level 5 Higher National Diploma consists of the Level 4 Higher National Certificate plus an additional 120 credits at Level 5 delivered via the general Computing pathway. The unit combinations and the list of optional units are:

Undergraduate Courses

Undergraduate Courses (Level 4/5/6)

Level 4 courses come in the form of 1st year of a bachelor's programme or HNC (Higher National Certificate). Depending on the type of associate degree a student may be able to start their 2nd year of bachelors (The course must be the same as the one they are applying for)

Level 5 courses come in the form of the 2nd year of a bachelor's programmes or an HND (Higher National Diploma). Depending on the type of associate degree a student may be able to start their 3rd year of bachelors (The course must be the same as the one they are applying for).

Level 6 courses are the final component of a bachelor’s degree.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is through a series of assignments including 95% written assignments, 4% group work, 1% presentations. the grades in each subject unit are shown as:

pass; merit; distinction

Graduate Course

Graduate Course (Level 6)

Level 6 courses are the final component of a bachelor’s degree.

Students who successfully completed Higher National Diploma in Business qualification can progress onto Degree Top-Up programme at many universities such as the University of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire New University, Teesside University, University of Sunderland, Buckinghamshire New University, University of Huddersfield, London Metropolitan University, Oxford Brookes University, University of Gloucestershire, University of Worcester, University of South Wales, Cambridge University, etc.

Graduation

Ceremony

During the summer following the successful completion of your course, you will receive an invitation to attend our graduation ceremony. This is a memorable occasion where family and friends join you and your tutors to celebrate your achievements. Our media students usually film this event to capture the moment when wearing your cap and gown, you shake hands with the guest speaker and receive your scroll. They filmed interviews with students and tutors.

The college photographer also takes group shots of graduates. The resultant DVD is sent to all those attending graduations. The ceremony takes place in the autumn following the successful completion of the Level 5 course.
